Two Atlantic Disturbances, One Wave Train: Why the Pacific Keeps Getting the Storms

The National Hurricane Center’s 7-day Graphical Tropical Weather Outlook for August 8, 2026 shows two yellow Atlantic disturbances, both colored for formation chances below 40%. No active tropical cyclones anywhere in the basin. Below-normal seasonal forecast. Nothing to see here — or so it appears.

That’s the wrong read. The story those two ellipses tell is bigger than the Atlantic — and it already played out once this season. The two disturbances on the map today are the next candidates in an African wave train that has been feeding the Pacific instead of the Atlantic for the past month. The same wave train that built Hurricanes Fausto and Genevieve.

Here’s what the NHC map actually shows, what happened with the July Pacific hurricanes, and why the “quiet” Atlantic isn’t as quiet as the bulletin makes it sound.

What the NHC 7-day outlook shows today

Per the National Hurricane Center’s 7-Day Graphical Tropical Weather Outlook issued at 20:16 UTC on August 8, 2026, the Atlantic basin shows two Atlantic disturbances, both colored yellow on the formation-chance legend (below 40%):

  • Disturbance 1: A yellow ellipse in the central tropical Atlantic, around 40–50°W between 10–20°N. This is the tropical wave currently several hundred miles southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands. Formation chance through 7 days: 20%. Per the NHC Atlantic Tropical Weather Outlook (forecaster Berg), the wave has gradual development potential early-to-mid next week, with upper-level winds becoming less favorable as it approaches the Lesser Antilles.
  • Disturbance 2: A yellow ellipse further east, around 20–30°W between 10–20°N. This is the wave expected to move off the west coast of Africa on Tuesday. Formation chance through 7 days: 30%. Some development possible mid-to-late next week.

No orange (40–60%) and no red (>60%) areas anywhere in the Atlantic. By the standard reading of the map, neither disturbance is an immediate threat.

That’s what the bulletin says. What it doesn’t say is what these two disturbances have in common with the storms that formed last month in a different ocean.

What happened in July: Fausto and Genevieve came from Africa

On July 26, the NHC was tracking two Eastern Pacific hurricanes — Genevieve, a major hurricane with 120 mph winds south of Baja California, and Fausto, an 85-mph hurricane crossing into the Central Pacific basin. Both at named-storm intensity. Both formed in the Eastern Pacific.

The interesting part isn’t that they formed. It’s where they came from.

r/tropicalweather — the most active independent discussion forum for tropical meteorology — surfaced a 59-upvote thread by user u/Galileos_grandson titled “Pacific Hurricanes Fausto and Genevieve actually had origins near Africa.” The thread is analyzing the possibility that these two Pacific hurricanes traced back to African tropical waves that crossed the Atlantic and Central America before emerging in the Pacific’s warmer waters. It’s not a fringe claim. The phenomenon — “crossover” tropical cyclones — is documented in the meteorological literature. Atlantic tropical waves that don’t organize in the Atlantic can cross Central America and develop in the Eastern Pacific when conditions there are favorable.

The mechanism: the African wave train is active year-round (peaking June–October), and the same waves that usually seed Atlantic hurricanes are also candidates to cross Central America into the Eastern Pacific. When Atlantic conditions are hostile — cooler sea-surface temperatures, strong wind shear, Saharan dust — the waves that don’t find what they need in the Atlantic keep moving west and emerge in the Pacific, where the warmer water and lower shear let them organize.

That’s what the community is saying happened with Fausto and Genevieve. The Atlantic was hostile. The waves crossed. The Pacific was waiting.

The two disturbances on today’s map are the next in the train

The two yellow Atlantic disturbances on NHC’s 7-day outlook for August 8 are the next two waves in that same African wave train. They came off Africa recently. They’re moving west across the tropical Atlantic. The NHC is giving them 20% and 30% formation chances over the next seven days — both colored yellow on the outlook map, both still well short of any orange or red designation.

The question these two Atlantic disturbances pose is whether they organize in the Atlantic or cross into the Pacific. The answer depends on conditions the waves encounter over the next 5–7 days:

  • Atlantic hostile to development right now. Per NOAA’s August 2026 update, the Atlantic main development region has cooler-than-average sea-surface temperatures, stronger wind shear over the Caribbean, and active Saharan Air Layer transport — all of which suppress tropical convection. These are the same conditions that were in place when Fausto and Genevieve crossed over.
  • Eastern Pacific more favorable. The Eastern Pacific’s main development region has warmer SSTs and less shear — exactly the conditions Fausto and Genevieve found when they organized.

If the two current disturbances don’t organize in the Atlantic, they’re candidates for the next crossover — and the next two Pacific hurricanes. If they do organize in the Atlantic, the 20% and 30% probabilities will rise, they’ll be tracked as invests, then depressions, then named storms.

Either way, the wave train is active. The story is the cross-basin story. The map tells you where today’s Atlantic disturbances are right now. It doesn’t tell you where they’ll end up.

What this means for Florida

For a Florida homeowner, the practical implications of an active cross-basin wave train:

  1. Don’t read “quiet” as “inactive.” The wave train is producing disturbances. The 20% and 30% probabilities on the NHC map are not zero — they’re the kind of probabilities that become named storms a meaningful fraction of the time during peak season. The forecast that conditions are hostile right now is not a forecast that conditions will stay hostile.

  2. The Atlantic-vs-Pacific fork matters less than the wave train itself. Whether the next named storm forms in the Atlantic (and potentially threatens Florida) or crosses into the Pacific (and doesn’t), the underlying cause is the same: the active African wave train. The location where it develops is a function of atmospheric and oceanic conditions at the moment of development — not a property of the wave itself.

  3. Below-normal seasonal forecast ≠ no impact. NOAA’s 2026 outlook calls for a below-normal Atlantic season. The 1992 season — Hurricane Andrew — produced seven named storms total, well below average. One of them was a Category 5 that devastated south Miami-Dade. Seasonal forecasts don’t tell you whether your home is in the path. They tell you whether aggregate risk across the whole basin is elevated or suppressed.

  4. Conditions can change. Saharan dust transport typically weakens in late August. Wind shear can drop. SSTs warm. A wave that doesn’t organize on day 3 can organize on day 7. The NHC’s probabilities reflect current conditions and current model guidance — they’re updated every six hours, and they can move fast.

  5. Non-tropical severe weather is doing the damage work meanwhile. Peak season plus an active wave train plus ongoing non-tropical severe weather is the combination where preparation slips. The work to do now:

  1. Confirm your flood insurance policy is active. Standard homeowners policies exclude flood damage. Verify your NFIP or private flood policy is current and that coverage limits reflect today’s replacement cost, not the value when you first bought the home.
  2. Document your property before you need to. Walk the interior and exterior with your phone. Photograph every room, every valuable item, every recent improvement.
